From the recording Spirit Of Grandfather
Lyrics
Grandfather of Eagles
[Verse 1]
By the fire’s last glow
You would trace the paths of stars
Tell of rivers
Tell of snow
How the heart remembers scars
You would laugh so low
Like the earth was in your chest
Every wrinkle
Every line
A road for us to rest
[Chorus]
Grandfather of eagles
High on the rising wind
We remember your footsteps
Every place that you have been
We honor your name
We carry your story through
In the hush of the evening
We send our love to you
[Verse 2]
Now your blanket’s folded
Empty cedar by the door
Yet your shadow on the ground
Still walks across this floor
Buffalo in thunder
Eagle cutting through the blue
All their strength and all their flight
Run in the blood from you
[Chant]
Hey-ya hey-ya
Grandfather
Hear us
Hey-ya hey-ya
We speak your name
Hey-ya hey-ya
Grandfather
Near us
Hey-ya hey-ya
We keep your flame
[Chorus]
Grandfather of eagles
High on the rising wind
We remember your footsteps
Every place that you have been
We honor your name
We carry your story through
In the hush of the evening
We send our love to you
[Verse 3]
Little ones are sleeping
Faces glowing in the coals
I will tell them how you walked
With a thousand ancient souls
How the buffalo stood with you
How the eagle shared its sky
How you taught us we stay whole
Even when we say goodbye
[Chant]
Hey-ya hey-ya
Grandfather
Hear us
Hey-ya hey-ya
In night’s soft light
Hey-ya hey-ya
Grandfather
Near us
Hey-ya hey-ya
In every dream tonight
[Chorus]
Grandfather of eagles
High on the rising wind
We remember your footsteps
Every place that you have been
We honor your name
We carry your story on
In the breath of the morning
In each child’s first song
[Outro]
Sleep now in the mountains
Where the wild herds still run free
Power of the buffalo
Flight of the eagle be
With you on your journey
Till our trails cross again
Grandfather of eagles
Live forever in your clan[Verse 1]
